The Ricoh Arena threw a special fifth birthday party for its key sponsors and tenants to mark its landmark anniversary.
Chief executive Daniel Gidney hosted a number of guests including Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd, Ricoh UK’s David Mills, Martin Reeves from Coventry City Council, Brian Colquhoun from Yorkshire Bank, Debbie Davies from the Coventry Telegraph, Marcus Wall from Jaguar, Jane Thompson from E.ON and Richard Edwards from G Casino.
A magician and an entertainer were on hand to welcome the visitors who enjoyed lunch in the club’s boardroom overlooking the stadium bowl.
Daniel said he was proud of the venue’s achievements in a relatively short space of time.
“We have been on a journey from the days of the highly contaminated gas works to the difficulties of getting the site approved for the building,” he told the party.
“The support of Coventry City Football Club and the vision of the city council and the Alan Edward Higgs Charity means we have come a long way.
“This is a unique project and I make no apologies for being very proud and passionate. I don’t believe there is anywhere else like this in the UK.”
David Mills, chief executive of Ricoh UK, said the company felt incredibly lucky to be associated with the venue.
“This is pretty special to us,” he said. “Everybody mentions the Ricoh Arena every Saturday and every time I hear it mentioned on the radio and TV and see it written in a newspaper, I get a real buzz.
“We have five years left of our sponsorship agreement and I see that relationship going on longer and longer as we move forward.”
Sky Blues director Joe Elliott said it had been great for the club to have been at the Ricoh for the last five years of its history.
“We really are determined to make sure that this season and hopefully for seasons to come that we have a football team that matches the excitement caused by Take That, the 2012 Olympics, 2015 Rugby World Cup and a conference for 3,500 delegates,” he said.
“We are proud to be here. It is a fantastic stadium and everybody says so. There is a great team behind the scenes and everybody that is here does a fantastic job.”
